The puzzle says: "pirates prefer: (i) their lives, (ii) getting money, (iii) seeing other pirates die".
If there was 1 pirate -- he would take the coin.
If there were 2 pirates -- pirate 2 would take the coin, pirate 1 won't get anything, but stay alive.
If there were 3 pirates -- why pirate 3 should give the coin to pirate 1?
If pirates 1 and 2 will not agree with pirate 3, then they'll have "2 pirates" situation and pirate 1
won't receive the coin. So why pirate 3 will propose a coin to pirate 1 (pirate 3 is extermly greedy,
according to puzzle)? I think, he'll rather propose pirate 1 to kill pirate 2. Since pirate 1 won't
receive a coin in any case, but will stay alive in both cases, so he'll rather see pirate 2 dead,
'cause it'll make him happy, according to puzzle.
The problem is that in this case the rest of the puzzle will have another solution.

you can't just randomly kill pirates. its not part of the puzzle. its only after the vote that the pirate gets killed.
