World Cup Question With the world cup in full bloom at the moment I have been watching a lot of games lately (come on Ireland :) but I noticed that the scoring system for the groups has changed slightly this year. Previously the points awarded for the group games were 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points if you lose, with goal difference (goals scored - goals conceded) being used as the arbitrer in the case of a draw. Now the question is this, given the following situation: 4 Teams per group Each team plays each other team once (3 matches total) 2 points per win, 1 point per draw, 0 points to lose Goal difference used as arbitrer for ties The top two teams from the group qualify for the next round. The question is will it make any difference to the teams who qualify now that the winning team gets 3 points per win and if so under what circumstances. This isnt too hard to work through (not too many combinations) but it should hopefully cause people to have to stop and think a bit, and is definitely not a gotcha type puzzle. By old method a & c qualify ,and by the new one a & b. vivek gupta Sunday, June 9, 2002   Fog Creek Home
