NYC Software Developer Professional Organizations?

Hi All,

I'm a recent Silicon Valley transplant, now at Google's NYC engineering office (work here: http://www.google.com/jobs/eng/sw.html)

While in California, I was a big fan of SDForum (www.sdforum.org).  It's somewhat like the ACM, but much more focused on industry and professional development, and it only operates in the bay area.  I'm looking for a similar organization in New York.  Can anyone make a recommendation?

How do your offices here compare with the ones you guys had in CA?

NYC has plenty of creative and bright people, but nothing like the community of practice for sw (tons of people that aren't just engineers but that do all the other things that go on in software companies) that exists elsewhere.  It's more fun to live here though ;-)  I've gone to a few NY software industry association gatherings (don't recall the url/though maybe that's the acronym) with a coworker, and I wouldn't call it exactly a developer's organization though they do have some interesting things.  NYNMA was the big association where all the silicon alley stuff used to go on, though of course those days are thankfully behind us.  This sites is a good place to get in touch with local stuff!  Craig's List is also pretty active here for event s and such.

I'm curious as well how you like it being in NY doing real software eng, coming from the left coast and all.
