The Old New York, New York Forum - So the big war thread disappeared?

So the big war thread disappeared?

I thought it scrolled off the screen, but a search for "war" and a serch for "bush" didn't turn it up.

In light of Joel's recent building communities post, I feel mildly oppressed. There was alot of great info & time that went into that thread... and now it's gone. Why start a thread if it might poof?

What does it mean to usability when the 'search' button searches an arbitrary collection of threads?
The expected behavior is that it searches all threads.
Thus people think weird thigns are going on which in fact are not.
Or do all topics go away on this sub-forum?

I get the conversational nature of the forums... It's just that the search didn't turn it up.

Newsgroups are like that too, and I see the same subjects brought up time and again as new people are introduced. That isn't good or bad, it just is.

I happen to like newsgroups better than most boards, so it stands to reason I like the JOS forums. The other forum packages are overly complex, IMHO. And I run two of them!

On the other hand, there's that Google archive of most newsgroups, so they never really go away. Searching through the JOS archive is more painful.

Yeah, the search here kind of sucks. I didn't have much time to implement it and it relies on MS SQL Server Full Text Indexing which is piss poor. I was hoping eventually google would index, but I think the ? is making google not go into the topics. If I had more time I'd fix it, in the meantime I've got about 923894 more important things to fix than this discussion board :)

I think Google's problem with your board is that the URL's change every time it visits, so eventually it decides that it's an infinite site and gives up.

The "ixReplies=7" changes all the time, so whenever Google comes back it sees all new links.

Personally, the "track threads you've read via the links" thing is beginning to get on my nerves... There's no way to "mark all threads read" so if I'm following 1 out of 5 threads, each time I come back I have to remember which threads I'm following. They only stand out of there have been no new posts.

Or else I have to click on every thread, even the ones I'm not interested in so that the ones with new posts stand out.

I guess everythings relative, when my politicians lie to me about the state of the economy for instance...I used to get annoyed, but now I just tell myself "well, at least they are not trying to invade Iraq..."

Makes everything seem smaller and easier to cope with :)

...in fact, Id like to thank americans everywhere for making me realise how lucky I am to live in a country that believes in justice, freedom and peace....

how many wars/police actions has america been involved in over the years? ...I forget.....

I travel a lot, Im currently spending a couple of months in New Zealand, before that I was in australia for a year or so....Im expecting to be moved across to Belgium (of all places?!?) pretty soon..
