Unemployment Experiences?

I thought it would be interesting to hear what New Yorkers, especially in the Tech industry, have been doing with their unemployment time. Lots of job hunting? If so, how's it going? Spending more time with your family? Starting a few initiatives of your own that you never had time for before? Sleeping in late?

During my period of unemployment (about 4 months), I spent a lot of time brunching with the rest of my unemployed friends.

Sometimes we would hang out with the self-employed friends, but they never really felt like they belonged.

I look back upon that time with a growing fondness. My only regret is that I didn't take the time to improve my painting. Next time, I'm going straight to the art supply store as soon as I've carried all my belongings home from the office. Maybe after brunch.

After a couple of months of goofing off, I found myself lazing on the couch watching a PBS special on the rise of the Islamic Empire.  It got to the part where they were showing Istanbul and I said "I want to go THERE."  I called up a similiarly unemployed friend of mine, and we went.  It was really really cool, I strongly recommend it.

I have been off for about 8 months (it was a planned vacation so I had some money set aside). I can say that it has been really great - I got a lot of work done on things that are important to me (www.xraylab.org) but at this point I need to go back to work and I don't want to! It's not that I didn't enjoy work but it sure is hard to beat NOT working.
