Satellite Internet connection?

I'm living in Amherst MA and looking for advice, recommendations (or warnings) from suburban (or country) folk who've tried  using a satellite dish to access the Internet.

I would guess it would be subject to rain fade just like satellite television.

We don't get an rain fade with our satellite TV, so I guess it depends on clarity of signal.

What you will notice with a satellite connection is that the high latency is very bad for interactive traffic (or traffic that is similar to interactive traffic). Telnet = bad, Download of 1 large file = good, download of several small files = bad.

For this reason, just about everything was painful, including surfing the web, except for when you needed to download something large.

We've since moved to fixed wireless (line of sight 2.4GHz), and it's blazingly fast and ultra low latency.

Actually, I cheated. :) I'm not from NYC, I just dropped in to see how the community was progressing and saw a chance to answer a question. I live in rural Colorado.
