Best Cell Phone in NYC?

Anyone have thoughts concerning which brand of cellphone works best within NYC given a particular cell phone service?

I'm not talking about comparing Verizon vs. T-Mobile, etc...  I actually mean within a particular service, have people had better experiences with Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, etc... phones.

The stores mostly say that the phones are equivalent when you are buying a new one, but sometimes they pick one over another...

Anyway, I don't personally care about a phone with lots of functionality.  Although I do prefer a non-flip phone.

I want one with good battery life that also will let me receive and make phone calls consistently.

I used a Samsung phone with Sprint service and it was top-notch--I got professional, business quality everywhere in the city.
