[baseball]Ownership *DOES* make all the difference
Isn't that interesting, the Red Sox just swung a trade with the D-Backs to land Curt Schilling. All Curt has to do is approve the trade. This is a guy the Yankees wanted!
The brand new owners built a team that was stastically better than even the 27 Yankees.
The brand new owners built a team that was better than the Yankees, and if it weren't for some bad luck (Damon getting injured and missing the 1st 2 games, Grady's brain fart, etc) -- the Sox win the ALCS, but take the Yankees to the brink anyway.
The brand new onwers swung the deals for Sauerback and Williamson at the trading deadline last year .. players the Yankees wanted.
The brand new onwers currently have a 72 hr window with which to work out a deal with Schilling. Another player the Yankees wanted.
Keep believing in Mystique and Aura, guys! :) Guess what? It all starts at the top. These aren't your father's Red Sox.

The Red Sux are cursed. It's a well known fact that if people believe that bad things will happen to them, somehow they do. This usually happens more to superstitious people, and ballplayers are very superstitious. So yes, they are cursed.

It's as simple as this. Do you really think that when it was ... I don't know ... the bottom of the 10th of the ALCS and the Red Sox batter was up, this conversation went through his head?:

Just to add something else. I was at the ALCS. The curse or thoughts of the curse did not enter my mind. The talk of a curse is perpertuated for the "casual" fan. The "dummy" fan.
No. What was entering through my mind was the actual game being played.
Thoughts like:
"Hmm. He's coming out to start the 8th. Ok. He must be taking him out at the first sign of trouble".
"Hmm. An 0-2 pitch to Jeter that he lines for a double. Hmm. Is that Grady calling for a meatball on 0-2? Who calls these pitches"
"Hmm. Bernie just got a hit. Ok Grady time to take him out. Thank god we got Timlin warming up. He's given up 1 hit all playoffs".
"Wait he's not taking him out! Noooooooooooooo!"
Once it gets tied:
"Wow. Too Little Too Late" stikes again." (his nickname amongst sox fans because of his habit for pulling starters 2 batters too late).

Focused on the game. Not on any curse or superstition. Yankee fans want to believe that stuff. Just like they want to believe in mystique an aura.

Let me put it another way. The Anaheim Angels were a "cursed" team. Donnie Moore (86) shot himself after not making the world series. Again. There was plenty of talk regarding "curses" when it came to this team. They never, ever made a world series.
Well, that was until 2002 when the team steamrolled the Yankees and won the world Series. What happened to superstitions then?
Or tell me about the Buccaneers (NFL). The Tampa Bay Yucks they have been called. This is a team famous for it's ineptitude. Aren't they the current NFL champions? What happened to superstitions then?

The original point I'm trying to make is that the Red Sox were owned by the racist, good ol boy, Yawkeys until the recent owners bought this team and became official in spring training of 2002. The real "curse" was the Yawkeys. They (or their trust) don't own this team anymore. You can't lump the failures of the Yawkeys with the new ownership.

Here's a tidbit:
Throughout the Yankees' dynasty of 1996-2001, they viewed the Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles as sleeping giants, dangerous franchises that were operated incompetently. But now the Red Sox are being run effectively, efficiently, and they are starting to win some of the battles the Yankees always won in past years. They'll have their next chance on the field in the 2004 season.

Wow. Think about this. I really don't care. I only follow baseball in the post-season, and only when NY is involved, which is most of the time. I have no clue what management is doing right now, and I don't care.
