New York milk live short?

Hi all,

I have moved to this city for two months and am still new to this city. I have a question in my mind for long. I shop around in grocery and always see that the milk in NY expire earlier about 3-4 days than other area. Why?

This makes the milk life to be only around 4-5 days..... , which sucks.

It's probably just a stricter health department regulation on milk shelf life.

I love the wording on milk cartons. You can buy milk in New York until midnight of the day that's stamped on the carton. In New Jersey you cannot buy it the day after the date stamped on the carton.

I'm jumbling it a bit, but that's the gist of it, two different ways of saying the same thing. I bet you can also buy Six eggs in New York but you can only buy a Half Dozen in New Jersey.

btw - that date isn't for drinking the milk, it's for SELLING the milk. I would assume you could drink it the day after you bought it no matter what the date on the carton is.

Maybe they assume people in NY drink less milk, so they have to move up the date so it will be good for longer after you buy it.

Is Jimmy Chu your real name, or just a reference to the Madonna scene in Reservoir Dogs?

New York City milk expires sooner because the difficulty of delivering milk in the city means that the average milk carton is unrefrigerated (sitting on the sidewalk or in a truck) for longer than the average milk carton outside the city, which is usually delivered directly to a loading dock in a supermarket.

Do you know everything? You also knew what those water towers were for.
