Not Relocating to NYC

I started a thread here a couple months ago about my possible move to NYC. Thanks again to all who posted to help answer my questions. In the end, I decided not to go, even though NYC is a pretty cool city. The commute was just going to be too brutal.

I'm starting my new job on Monday, and sending the best job I ever had to NY for some New Yorker to fill. On the upside, I just back from a 4 drink lunch that included a body-shot of tequila from a hot blonde in a french maid outfit.

So I can see why you don't need to come to New York. Looks like you got plenty of culture where you are already.

I'm surprised this thread wasn't bombarded with questions of to whom they should be sending their resumes. I'd ask you myself, but I'm planning on leaving myself in a year or two, too short for a new job.

Glad you stayed away. Moving to NY would have been DISASTROUS for you, unless they QUADRUPLED your salary.

I really wouldn't agree that 4x salary would be necessary, but I guess that's sort of irrelevant at this point. I was considering upstate NY, or CT. I was looking for a place to rent, which allowed CT to be "affordable". My one-way commute was going to be an hour and a half, best case scenario.

I would say that if I didn't have children, I would have taken the free move to NY. But I just can't imagine trying to raise a family there. I would have never been able to do after-school things with my kids, for example.

The real clincher, though, was what started happening at my employer. I worked for Bank of America, in the investment management area. You may have seen some interesting news articles a few months ago involving my old firm and the Attorney General of NY...

Now I have a new gig in my home town. My commute is a bit longer, but I didn't have to take a pay cut, and there is some potentially large-ish upside if things work out as planned (it's a hedge fund).

The best part was visiting NYC. I will definitely return for another visit in the future. It's a great place you have there. I'm just trying to figure out how you guys afford it... :)
