rant: why centrino is not standard ?

Why manufacturer not produce every Intel based laptop with Pentium M + Centrino technology ?
That way we can get it cheaper than now.

"Centrino" is just a marketing ploy.

If you use a Pentium-M and intel's WiFi chipset in your laptop, then you can label it as "Centrino"

They put a big hype on the name so that consumers ask for "Centrino" laptops when they go shopping.

This encourages vendors to stock/build "Centrino" laptops. To do that, you must puchase both the CPU and WiFi Chipset from Intel.

It's just Like the "Pentium Inside" marketing campaign. They just added more chips to sell.

It sounds like Michael got sucked in!  Any company can produce a WiFi chip and some probably do better than Intel in both signal and battery performance.

Get marketting idea though..
