Why would you want a CLIENT-SIDE solution? SERVER-SIDE solutions allow for much richer interface and, as Joel says, the web applications are the future. ;)

Because I have no control over the server. I have an account and not much more. Besides, I feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that during the night the data is sleeping next to me on my computer.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Could you just run a server on your desktop/notebook/"client" machine?
