Well, since I didn't get a chance to respond to those threads...
I definately listen to music while I am working. Whether doing design or development work, I'm just not in the kind of place where you get your own office. I picked up a pair of Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones and I think those were the best investment (albeit small) that I've made.
As far as music, it depends on the activity. I listen a lot to Live365.com and bounce between downtempo and trance stations to rock to jazz. One of my favorits is Attention Span Radio which plays some good classic funk and jazz.

The thrum of the fan, the staccato echo of the keys, the rhythmic pumping of my thigh after too many hours sitting with too much caffeine.
Who needs music when the body sings.
Actually though, last night I played Alice's Restaurant.

Simon is such a hippie. Him and RMS, riding in a VW microbus.
Sarah McLaughlin. Depressing, but I can't stop listening.

I brought in a boatload of 80's cd's and put them on my (personal) laptop here. (Not my company laptop, mind you.) My office neighbors like 80's music as well, so I'm not annoying anyone. Yet. :)

I listen to either opera, techno/dance, or warrior metal.

CF,
I've read that noise-cancellation headphones don't do a very good job of cancelling out high frequency noises (like human conversations). That they're generally best only for low-frequency blocking (like airplane engines). Is that incorrect?

Alice's Restaurant is a classic.
Love listening to very loud classical music when I am burning the midnight oil in the office.
During the day no music. ... need to hear the phone!
