user access As a website developer, I am providing username/password acesss on my site. I check against a flat file.

Forget about it. If it's controlled by sales people you may as well make it a plain text file and publish it out on the main page for all to view.

old time was being sarcastic, i.e., you can't trust the sales people to keep the system secure, so you might as well just give the passwords to everyone
Alternatively, tear a new hole in your jeans, if you're going to get shafted you might as well enjoy it.
