Pop Up Blockers, Tabbed Browsers. Feh.
The "IE Team" has been working on embedding internet technologies into the OS so that for Longhorn/Avalon/Winforms/Dotnet/XAML/YourCodenamegoeshere Windows is differentiated from the commodity Unix OSes.

My guess as to what the the 'new' IE team will be working on?
-- the usual HTML W3C stuff (fixing CSS, xhtml, etc)
But I suspect that the main concentration will be on making IE into a XAML aware platform for applications. Since XAML is nothing more than an XML file (give or take), it'll transfer fairly easily over an Internet connection (oops, almost said HTTP), and will likely have a way to make SOAP/WS calls back to the server where the real heavy lifting would happen.
After all, that was the main strength of IE over Netscape -- the fact that you could use IE to build real applications, and not just pages of blinking text with MIDI accompanyment.
