History really IS written by the winners

Joel's latest screed talks about how bad it is that Microsoft, which used to be the kings of backward compatibility, has just recently stopped caring about it.

Good lord.

I worked on the OS/2 project in college (when 2.0 was running but unstable, 1.2 had just been released; 1.3 was being worked on at IBM to Microsoft's displeasure).

Guess what one of the biggest issues was between the IBM and Microsoft developers at the time? Backward compatibility.

And guess who was on which side?
