Matthew,
Joao
That filter thing was a good idea and after I did a google for it I found this slashdot article http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/04/03/29/2353236.shtml?tid=126&tid=185 in the top 10 results and from there this pretty cool news site http://memigo.com/ which alsmost does what you ask for.

Excellent work Joao!

And could you also include an address book, a calendar, a notepad and a 'to-do' list in it? :-P

If Joel were still around I would suspect these type of programs be banned in a flash. The whole point was that the GUI infuences the interactions.
Just me (Sir to you)
You know what would be cool. Some some of generic discussion forum GUI plus a kind of driver for each type of forum. One for Joel on Software, Slashdot, etc.
Matthew Lock
Oh, you mean an offline reader such as CCS (Compuserve) used to spawn like gerbils?
Simon Lucy
No offense, but...why? What's wrong with the browser? Unless you did add something like Bayesian filtering.
Brad Greenlee
Wow, it's like a primitive RSS aggregator. Only without the RSS. Or aggregation...
Wally
Er, what's wrong with reading the main page to see if you're interested?

The man had an itch, and he scratched it.

Its funny how so many programmers will be nice enough when someone is "bowing to their majesty" by asking for help, but if another programmer writes some software or shares a bit of knowledge with any degree of confidence, the other programmers will immediately start to pick at the strawman. With that in mind, maybe we should revisit why so many programmers complaign about the teamwork at their jobs.
Clay Whipkey
I was just thinking how many dozens of pages of C++ that would take.
Alex
Add a "blacklist" feature for posters and I might buy it.
.
Ooh, the ability to plonk people. I like it.
MilesArcher
Really neat, even though such a perlish language is quite hard to read for me ;-)
Pakter
A blacklist feature based on what? There is no identifiable information on the site. And offenders will just use different aliases, thus "hacking" the system. Oh, the cleverness.
Alex
Offenders may use different aliases, but they would not necessarily know that their aliases are blacklisted, and by whom.
GP
Right, didn't think about that.
Alex
It's an interesting program, but what value does it add to the JOS experience. In order to be useful it has to add value. As it stands it simply shows the posts in another program.

The fonts / layout in the lower pane is a bit butt-ugly.
Matt
I actually wouldn't be half surprised if there was a joelonsoftware parser in CPAN already.
