Webhosts4Life has been reccomended here...
Hi All,
Webhosts4Life has been reccomended here by a few people a number of times, so I thought that I'd give them a try. On Sunday evening I sent an email to their sales questions contact address confirming how something would work, but I still haven't received a reply. Is their customer support more proactive than this? Not really a good sign.

From what I've heard their support has taken a bit of a dive.
But what do you expect for your $10 a month ?

Try Lunarpages.com. Check out their forum at www.lunarforums.com.

"But what do you expect for your $10 a month"
That is an observation I also make. At these prices you can't expect much "personalized" service. Suppose some sales or support person spends 30 minutes on your request, how many months of service would they need to sell you just to break even on that single investment?

Go with 1and1.com They were the ones who introduced themselves to the US market by giving away 3 years of Linux hosting for free. I got one of their accounts (I meant to get three) and I think it's great.
Their current deals start at 4.99 for both Windows and Linux hosting.... it's good stuff.

Not that you asked, but you should also consider pair.net. I've hosted my site there for 3 years without any problems at all. I work with two people who've hosted there longer with the same experiences.

Go with 717.org. They are some of the nicest and most helpful hosting people in the business.

Pair networks (pair.net) was the most expensive host I know of, last I checked. I mean times more expensive than you average host. Also, they use FreeBSD for their Unix hosting, which may make you fill somewhat uncomfortable when working in shell, if you're used to Linux.

Long as people are dropping ads for their favorite hosts, I thought I should add a plug for the one I use (not affiliated with them).
Not a basic webhost, but I like the setup better anyway:

Virtual servers essentially. If you are comfortable maintaining your own machine, but don't want to worry about hardware, I suggest them. FreeBSD/Linux "colocation". I've been using them for 2+ years with no problems.

I've had a site hosted by webhost4life for maybe six months and their support has always been very fast (on the few occasions when I've needed it). I've gotten used to getting a response with whatever I need within 30 minutes of submitting an issue.
It's true that you get what you pay for. The price for webhost4life is pretty nice for what they offer but don't be surprised if you notice some limitations. For me, they've been well worth the money so far.

I do all of my webhosting through http://tektonic.net
I get a virtual kernel, with a complete filesystem, full root access, a static IP address, the ability to compile/install and run whatever software I want, and a hell of a lot of bandwidth, for just $15 a month.
They also have pretty good support. They have always responded in less than 24 hours, and I'd venture to guess that their mean response time has been roughly six hours. Sometimes it takes a few emails back and forth to get a problem solved, but I've been very happy with their level of service.
I currently host five websites on my tektonic account. Four of the websites are just tiny personal projects that get virtually no hits at all, but the other site gets a decent amount of traffic (14,000 page views in the last 22 hours), and I've never had any problems.
Anyhow, I don't work for their company. I'm just a satisfied customer.

I've been using webhost4life for about 2 years without any problems. A few months ago I complained of some slowness and they moved me onto a new server w/o any hassles and they've been very responsive when it comes to help desk tickets (usually within 30 minutes for priority 2). I have sent emails to there sales and it did take a while but I'll tell you thier tech support is good.
