Remember when I said Novell's backing (and strategic interests) had sped up Mono a great deal, only to get ridiculed by the masses crying "no way, dude!"?

Well, take a look at what our friend Miguel de Icaza had to say on the 22th (at http://www.go-mono.com/monologue/)

"We still need to support the Itanium and the x86-64 CPUs (if you have a good recommendation about a book on these platform, please mail me) as they are important platforms for SUSE."

I just had to rub it in, because that's the kind of guy I am: an asshole.

I still don't see how this proves that it has sped up the development.  It may have made some requirements more critical, but has it really been sped up?

Actually, it sounds like Novell is slowing them down...  forcing them to develop for platforms (Itaniam and x86-64) that aren't vital to mono's popularity right now.

Porting Mono to IA-64 would definitely be a sideline ... how long has it taken Microsoft to release a .NET framework for IA-64?

Well, my point is that Novell's involvement is making things happen. If you need .NET on the SPARC platform you'd certainly think it's happened much faster than if Novell hadn't been involved. It's just that you don't care, thus the "actually it's slowing them down" perspective.
