medical forum?

This one is for those of you who write medical software, or work for a company working with the medical industry... Do you know of a JoS-like forum for the medically inclined?

I googled around a little, but the results weren't too satisfying. Unfortunately, it is hard to search for equivalents of things on google.

I'd be very interested to know if there is a JoS-like place where medical topics are more dominant.

I do not know of one.  I also work on medical software and would very much enjoy a JOS style site for medical informatics.  It occurs to me that this discussion forum is quite good from a UI point of view.  I have gone on other sites like slashdot and frankly I find the threads quite hard to follow.  I think a medical software forum with this simple kind of threadless interface would be nice.  I wonder though if it would have much traction.  Because it is about a specific domain space I wonder if the information exchanged would mostly fall under trade secret.

Maybe we should start one.  Drop me a line if you would like to discuss it.

I've never participated much in newsgroups so I don't know what they are like in detail but couldn't the same be said about this forum?  Aren't there a bunch of newsgroups that deal with software development and management issues?

I just like the format of this forum.  If we could write the occasional article and just have discussions on a variety of issues pertaining to medical and possibly bio-informatic systems, I would find it useful.

Two the two posters who imply that such sites exist, could you provide links?  My Google skills are obviously not up to snuff.

looking at those newsgroups it seems to me that they are quite broad and fairly infrequently viewed.  I think we are looking for a site for people who actually code (or at least design) medical (or bio) software.

The way that this forum developed is that people take a look to read Joel's articles and then discover the forum.  I think you need a guru to attract the participants.

Have you guys ever heard of a little something called "Informatics"? It's all about writing medical software, and there's a pretty handy little newsgroup devoted to it. You should really check it out sometime!

Unfortunately "medical software" is an incredibly broad area.

I fall into that area, but my software has more to do with learning, cognitive pscyhology, speech & language, etc.

Conversely, I know someone who wrote 'medical software' that controlled  a chemotherapy  machine.

COMPLETELY different issues.
I'm worried about useability and how we think. He's worried about telemetry and fault tolerant designs and rigorous testing.

"Software engineering" is pretty broad, but nothing compared to how broad "medical software" is.  (Ironic since med software seems to be a a subcase of SW Engr.  But, while Med SW inherits from the SW Engr base class, it extends the hell out of it <g>.

Well, I wasn't referring only to "writing medical software". The topics on JoS are more or less tied to software engineering, but plenty of interesting questions get posted on here that span a wide variety of topics within software engineering some of which have nothing to do with programming.

Newsgroups are one way to go. I definitely don't consider JoS another newsgroup though. It has a unique character which puts it ahead of many others.

It would be wonderful if a similar medium existed for medically oriented engineers, software developers or even the plain enthusiasts... I am not sure how hard it would be start one, and how successful it would be.
