Joey stayed behind because he was looking for his pet duck that had gone missing -- it turns out that it was hiding in the table hockey game. He had to get Monica to gleefully smash it open with a sledghammer to get the duck out since he had too many good memories of the table. The duck probably saved Joey's life. I wonder how the duck knew what was going to happen.
