JOS Suggestion

Would it be feasible to allow people to write articles for JOS kinda like GDNet has folks submit articles to them?  I know software management isn't the biggest topic (to cover), but maybe technical articles could be included?  There are a lot of smart folks on the board and I think people would be willing to write for it.

That's the last thing we need , yet another submitted article site. 

Keep this site as mostly discussion based, of course with the occasional gem of an article from Joel.

I don't think the articles would interfere with what Joel says.  In fact I think they would enhance the site by allowing other professionals to display their 'gems' as you put it.  Although it may give Joel more work because he would have to review all of the submitted work.

I've never really thought of the JOS forum as Joel centered even though that may be Joel's goal.  Building a community around Joel only goes so far as he only has so many things to say and people only have so many things to ask him.  Therefore it may be a good idea to enlist the participation of others in a manner outside of the forum.

I don't believe weblogs are the solution.  The problem with weblogs is that they are too personal (I did this and I did that) and the collective 'weblogs' don't form any real community and are difficult to search through. Granted, Joel, established a community by attracting people with a weblog of sorts, but the real community began with Joel's forum and could possibly be expanded through the use of an article system.

I'm not saying that there aren't weblogs out there that present material other than 'What I did toda', but a weblog is a weblog and that 'What I did today' stuff or variants thereof, somehow rears it's ugly head.

No, seriously though.  I appreciate his articles a great deal and have passed a few around the office or left them anonymously on people's desks.

But anyway, let's not muddy the water at this point.  If you want to post and article, do it in the forums.

Posting an article that you worked on in the forum would be a dead end.  It would scroll off and be forgotten.

A separate, archived - submitted article section on JOS definately would not detract from Joel's own thoughts.

I guess I've made my point and arguing it any further would be suicide.
