A database Application running on Linux?

Hello,

Can someone suggest a good project for an application to be run on Linux. Preferably something to do with databases .
I am open to all suggestions.

I plan to develop this application using WINE, will this be a drawback?. I mean i want to develop a VB kind of application and make it compatible with Linux via WINE.

I usually take what i do seriously, i would like my application to be used by lots of people in the Linux community. More the merrier.

Please, give me your valuable suggestions. What is something to do with a database that the Linux community would like !.

Also feel free to flame me if you think this post is weird.

A brain measuring poll. Ask a few key questions and help people determine how social they are, will they be able to handle situations or are they too geeky, that'd be fun. You could write a VB client that dishes out the polls and write it back to the backend.

No offense intended, but if you're asking these types of questions, you probably aren't ready to head a project like this. At least not one that will be widely used.

If you're looking to break into this type of thing, then a good place to start is sourceforge:

I was planning on writing something for work, had a couple of things sketched out, but found something nearly identical there. I was amazed how well thought out the code was. I learned a couple of things. Once I wrap up some consulting, I plan on contributing.

I for one would welcome a SQL-builder/datamodeller ala MS Access that hooks nativly into MySQL and PostgreSQL (add you fav here).
It would also be nice if it could port databases and SQL between the diffrent DBMS through some meta format, with awareness of the quirks of each DBMS.

But i thought that such builders were already available !. Arent they? I would love to build such a tool. What all features would you like in it?. PostGRESQL has pgpadmin right?

Im not up to speed on Postgre apps, but I dont think there is something like that for mysql.
Sane SQL-builders are pretty rare as far as I know. At least in the lower price ranges. I could be wrong though.

(By SQL-builder Im refering to the programs that write SQL code for you. Saves a helluva lot of typing when you have to do a join over four tables and stuff.)

Well, there certainly are sql builders. The MySql sql builder is rather nice. It lets you build your sql in a grid like other products with the mouse. However, this builder does not let you setup your referential integrity etc (which I wish it did…as even ms-access had that 10 years ago).

Last time I used mysql..was a long time ago (more then 1 year ago). However the windows sql builder for MySql actually even used the SAME icons that the sql builder in ms-access uses. So, I would think that things are even better now. Too many things were missing for my tastes..but the graphic mysql was useable.

Here is a screen shot of those same icons used in MySql….those MySql guys certanily have no fear of using ideas outthere already!
