The Best Thing on Television, Ever
I haven't seen it but I plan to. As long as we're on the subject I would like to recommend the recent DVD release of "Freaks and Geeks". My guess is that most of the posters on this site were one or the other back in high school. I think the show is great.

I think it's hilarious how much the anti-television people are missing in their crusade against "stupidity". There's some incredibly smart television available.
+1 for Freaks and Geeks. My wife and I watched it and loved it the first time around, and were really disappointed when it got canned after the first season. I was over-joyed to have the DVDs in hand and watch it all over again.

I really enjoy people who think a combination of claiming not to watch TV and "reading books" will convince people they are intelligent. It is a rather sad fetish. Most TV is awful. Most books are awful. Discrimination is the key.

The only compulsion stronger than the one that drives people who don't watch TV to tell you about it every few minutes is the mysterious force that compels people who live in New York City to mention that as often as possible.

The Sopranos is the best thing I've seen on TV in a while. That and all of the Discovery/History Channel stuff on engineering disasters.

"Actually, I was a three sport letterman (made All-State in football) and used to beat up freaks and geeks like you after out-hacking them in computer class. "
I was also a three sport letterman (basketball, cross country, and track & field) . Funny thing was that I despised most of the jocks in school. First day at PE, I whacked the school bully whey he was going up for a layup. There was a collective gasp. The bully pushed me, but I just grinned and kept playing. After that everybody had a hard time putting a label of me.
People like you will forever be in my crosshairs. Better that I don't run across you on a cour, or your ass will be on the floor a lot.

What WONDERFALLS got canned! Aww damnit! No wonder I couldn't find it on TV lately. It was a little weird but fun to watch. Why are all the shows I like short lived. :(

I was the typical geek in high school.
You know, I really don't want to relive the experience, or even be reminded of it.
Why does everyone thing "Hey, you were a geek, this is about you, you'll love it?" I hated most of high school and never want to go back there, even in television, ever again.

NB re: the guy posting about not having a tv. I was that person. Just stuck my tv in the closest and reclaimed at least 8 hours per week.
Then my brother gave us one for a wedding present, and despite my protest the antenna went up. Despite enjoying certain shows (SG1, survivor, ST) I want the box to go. I don't think it is ever going to happen though.

Reporting your habits, such as TV avoidance or book reading, could never convince anyone worth convincing that you're intelligent. Only intelligent discussion can do that.
Avoiding TV doesn't absolutely require missing out on intelligent TV, but every few months when somebody tells me that program X is brilliant I pop on a tele just long enough to discover their idea of brilliant. Sad really. Always disappointed. Most often they require laugh tracks to cue the desired response.
My favorite facet of the TV discourse is when defensive zombies jump to the conclusion that the implied alternative is to read books. That's an easy straw man since it's true that most books published for mass audiences are insipid, and much reading is not dramatically less passive than staring at the idiot box. While studying is a wonderful activity, choosing alternative "entertainments" isn't necessarily among the implied options. Sad again. The middle mind triumphant. The eternal search for Fun.
[Cue the music... pan across a bleak hospital room to the grizzled ancient on his deathbed, reflecting upon the most impressive act of his lifetime: raising three children who's most impressive lifetime achievements will be...
And so on. Fade out.]
Try on for size: climbing a mountain, building a house, painting a landscape, tutoring a child, popping into the coffeehouse for an impromptu discussion of politics or philosophy, playing the oboe, curing pancreatic cancer, pick-up basketball, carving a mantlepiece, visiting the elderly, inventing an efficient desalination device, baking a pizza, learning Aikido, composing a song, swimming the strait...
What will you reflect back on?

Actually funny you should say this. I am an anti-tv person. While I have shows I just plain enjoy for various reasons (call them sad if you like), I prefer my life without tv. (Lets say I know I get addicted to the box, and much prefer not to have it around at all. I am the type of person whos sees a KFC advertisement and wants KFC, even though I refuse to eat fast food).
My husband loves it, just loves it. So we are working at finding a medium. We just went out and bought a stack of lego. We just sat around for a few hours building lego.
There is definetly a different feeling after playing lego for a few hours, as opposed to watching tv for a few hours.
Note, I don't have anything against tv at all. I just despise the fact that when tv enters my life it ends up taking up to 20hours per week of my time. I am happy to spend 3-4hours, but not an entire day.
As for the book theory, I have over 1,000 books. I collect them for a hobby, I love to read them, but two things:
1. reading a fiction book can be just as bad as watching tv. I will get hooked on an author, raid the local library and spend a week doing nothing but reading. To the detriment of everything.
2. Reading non-fiction books can be hard work, because ultimately you are learning, or this could be termed studying depending on how heavy the book is.
The previous poster was correct, I don't think reading is the tv replacement. I think TV is almost slightly more social then a book (at least you talk during the ads).
One thing I do insist, in my house the lounges do not all centre around the TV.
(Sorry about the rant, this is actually something I am very passionate about, and the fuel for about the only argument that my husband and I 'almost' had)

I find the same. When I paiid my last satelite RTV subscription (mainly to get the cricket world cup) I found "The Sopranos" were on one of the channels. I watched one episode and couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
"The Office" is good, as Joel says, and is one of the few comedies not to have canned laughter. The result is rather strange. But still no more than a pleasant way of passing half an hour, like an episode of "Cheers" or "The Simpsons", to name the only two programs on American TV I ever regularly watch.

"What will you reflect back on?"
Narrowly avoiding two international incidents and doing five other things that would have been international incidents had anyone found out.
Oh, and violating a congressional directive.
Also (in no particular order):
-driving a ballistic missile submarine
-driving an aircraft carrier
-marrying a cheerleader
-telling cruise ships to change course
-tooling around the Persian Gulf in a 22' boat with an armed marine and a helicopter escort
-visiting the Playboy Mansion
-getting lost in the Sinai
-traveling both the Suez and Panama canals
-getting rejected by Harvard Law (arrogant jerks)
-hosting an exchange student for a year
Sadly, thanks to having to go rescue the survivors of a volcano eruption, I missed my chance to climb a mountain.

I thought perhaps that was the international incident you alluded to.
