Office integration

I'm working with some people developing a tool for office management, and there's some requirements for integrating with existing office platforms.

Primarily the goal is to import existing data such as names, email addresses, etc., from any applications that store this type of information. For example, integration would be common with Outlook/Exchange, Sharepoint, and whatever other CRM packages are out there.

Is there a tool available for doing this sort of thing? Of course the data could just be straight imported, but any changes in the existing data would have to be propogated down. Generally speaking, I want to have a reference to the data, not a copy.

They're primarily involved with Windows, but the existing app is in Java, and the potential is there for moving to Linux as well.

Any ideas? Is this just something that is going to have to be hard-coded into the product? Commercial products are fine.
