Hmmm.. if it's only a bunch of guys checking in and out files on a single UN*X like server it should be fairly straight-forward. It's been a while now but the latest RedHats (Fedora Core 1 is the one I am using) CVS is one of the things you can install. Just install the server and the client and pretty much you can check in and out files. For direction it really depends on your team's familiarity with CVS, if they are completely new to it consider buying a quick and simple (even graphical, if need be) tutorial for USD$15 at the local computer book store. Or have one person read a book, set up the srever, and quickly write a cheat sheet and seminar everyone can attend. I don't know too many people who has taken a programming course or two and not know at least Sourcesafe or RCS, so they will know what to do with these commands. They just need to get used to it. Have a nightly or periodic build that ties to the Grand Unit Test is probably the most interesting part of this whole process.

one of the really fun aspects of open source software is the amazing number of dicks you run into when trying to set shit up.
