What is this gui style called?

I know there is a name for it, but I cant remember it!
Left hand pane (narrow) has icons that represent different tasks. Right hand pane displays the gui for each task. The effect is much like a tabbed interface. Apple does it, MS does it.

It has a name.

I think you're thinking of an "inductive GUI", like this, perhaps: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_task-based_ui.asp

Yes, thats it!

Nah..
Actually, Joel talks about it the UI book.. 6th chapter, and calles it a tabbed dialogue.. but there is another name for it. I dont use XP but I rember seeing it on some of the system settings HTAs in XP.

It's not what Greg is referring to. Zone Alarm has something similar, though it doesn't use icons in the left pane. In fact Explorer is actually using the same thing, though with a tree view.

you mean like add-remove programs on windows XP (and maybe before)?
it is a sort of tabbed dialog, the tabs are just on the left.

What about "MultiplePageDialog ICON_STYLE" or "Standard Wizard With Steps"? I'm browsing http://www.jidesoft.com/products/dialog.htm

Apple calls it Master-Detail.  If you've used iTunes, the thin Playlist strip is the Master and the larger area is the Detail.

Oh, seems like there are lots of names for it, but Volks was the one I was looking for. Its weird because almost all gui elements have established names. (Toolbar, toolplatte, statusbar etc.)

I think I shall refer to it as a master-pane from now on.
Or maybe Confuserbar?

All in favor of Confuserbar pane say aye!

Aye!

I definitely vote against Master-Detail.  Makes me think of master-detail Access forms.

I like "multi-view application with icon-based navigation".  It's a bit wordy, but at least it describes the model.
