Useful SQL Server errors...
So I made my laptop a domain controller (Win2k3) to test some things out. I tried to revert the process - no errors, etc.
However, SQL Server won't start - event log gives me the following, useless error message:
"The MSSQLSERVER service depends on the Net Logon service which failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully. "
ideas? A quick google search didn't bring anything remotely useful back...

My experience has been that accounts and all their settings just don't survive a promotion followed by a demotion. You're not supposed to do this, really. Of course everyone does it, and it basically required a lot of rebuilding and reinstalling to get back to a sane condition.

Ah the Sharepoint Man ;-) I figured it out - the machine was (as a result of being a DC) running DNS. I uninstalled DNS, but failed to remove primary dns suffix from the "computer name" dialog box. Rebooted and it was happy - why it would affect SQL Server, I have no idea...
I am running VMWare for my sharepoint portal server test/dev instance but as it is not recommended to install it on a domain controller - I installed it on the host machine (laptop.) Unfortunately I never got sharepoint portal server 2003 running properly with a domain account and had trouble uninstalling it altogether. And so, I'll add the 'domain' complexity later on - once it becomes a deployment issue - right now I'm just tooling around with Sharepoint since my employer wants to know how to customize the UI.
By the way, am I correct in saying that in order to customize the look & feel of a sharepoint portal server 2003 site (outside of themes/css) you need to use Frontpage 2003?

After reading my (already posted) reply above - I realized it was completely incoherent ;-)
So the gist is - My laptop was running as a Domain Controller such that I would not need a 2nd virtual machine to run as a domain controller for the sharepoint virtual machine.
Failing to get Sharepoint running properly with a domain account - I decided that I didn't want to worry about the complexity (or taking the time) of setting up the domain account/app domain and whatever security privileges necessary to get this working right. I have to admit I didn't read any of the documentation for doing this - so it's my fault for not getting this to work.
So I demoted the laptop and that's when a few things broke, like SQL Server. Looks like I'll have to reinstall Outlook, otherwise - everything looks ok.

Regarding SPS and the domain account -
- Did you DCPromo the SPS box? Neither IIS nor SPS will survive that. DCPromo a 2003 box then install IIS and SPS. (or DCPromo an SPS box, then uninstall SPS and IIS and reinstall them...)
- I'm not sure I have a handle on it, but it seems that SPS has an issue running with the Admin account; I couldn't get it to work. But I created an SPS account, put it in the admins group, and used that and it worked fine. (most likely PEBCAK, but that's what worked for me)

well, now that my machine is back to 'normal' I'm going to give sharepoint another shot on the laptop. However, my VMWare instance of win2k3 won't let me uninstall Sharepoint 2003 Portal Server - I get the following error:
Product: Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 - Setup has encountered a error and needs to close. 1706.No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. The Windows Installer cannot continue.
I'll assume it's because it can't find the installation source. On another note, while I couldn't uninstall the Portal Server portion - I find it odd that I'm allowed to uninstall Sharepoint Services when Sharepoint Portal Server explicitly requires it.
