Getting software contracts

I am working on a startup software company. I have a pool of talented programmers. Just dont have a clear way to get contracts/projects. Do you guys know how to get sofwtare projects/contract based work from clients, how to find the clients?

Start a front company in india that really subcontracts
the work back to your group.

How can you have a pool of programmers and nothing for them to do? That's the recipe for a failing company. First you go get the work, then you hire the people to do it, not the other way around.

You can't start up a company just because there are a bunch of unemployed programmers sitting around with nothing to do. You start up a company with something to do, then figure out how many programmers it will take to do it.

So, state your purpose. What industry are you serving? What customers do you know? Where are they? What kind of services do they require and when? Then get on the phone and start calling them.

IF you're just starting up, social networking is the most effective way.  Like the previous poster said though.. you should have done that prior to starting up to get a gig or two lined up.

Business development.

Hire someone to cold call prospective clients.  Say out of 100 calls, you might get 10 people that will talk to you, 3 people that would meet with you, and 1 that will sign a contract.  Your mileage may vary.

When I meant,  I have a pool of programmers, that meant I know them and I can arrange. I haven't started paying them yet. I will hire them on contract basis.

I liked the suggestion of cold calls and social network. I am just looking for some more ways to get clients.

Get a product.

A niche.

A vertical market.

A pitch.

First you get the money. Then you get the power. And then you get the women... (C) Scarface

Daryle, if you want to steal jobs from America, you have to work out to do it yourself.

What a coincidence!

I too know many programmers who I am not paying and who do not work for me.

Also, I do not know how to get contracting work other than posting in net chat rooms asking for advice!

Give the contracts to me instead because I am taller and have better hair than the original poster.
