Does anyone have any experience with these computer?  They seem really cheap.  Are they crap or a good buy?

I'm curious to know whether the Java apps were compiled in native mode, or just the usual slow bytecode. Two things I never download: .Net and Java apps :-)

For browsing, word processing it should be fine.. Thats what many in the world do..

Heavy gamers or developers may not find it suitable....

Remember they come without a monitor.

They include a Linux distribution and Open Office. Remember that an OEm will pay around $100 for a Windows license, so they don't look that cheap. Who and what do you want the machine for?

OEM's don't pay $100 for XP Home. Hell, OEMs will resell you XP Home for a LOT less than $100, and I'm sure they're making their piece of the profit.

I don't want it for anything.  I was just fascinated to see a PC available for $298 and wanted to know if it was crap that would break in a week.  Based on its specs I could use it for programming (though I would add RAM).  My feeling is that as the computer gets cheaper and cheaper the manufactuirer would have to skimp on things like the power-supply so does that make this a disposable computer?  Would I be choosing between a cheap Dell for $600 and this for $300 but this $300 one only lasts a year if you are lucky?

Power supplies seem to be costiing between $10-$15 where I am. Not much room to save money there. What's in question is likely to be the reliablity of the motherboard - since I'm presuming that the keyboard and mouse will be bottom of the range. What make is the mobo?
