Annoying WinXP icon Every once in a while an icon appears on my desktop. It's a black triangle pointing up, a smaller circle under it, and under that a black triangle pointing down. It seems to want to help me scroll things faster, and I can grab the black dot and move the thing around the screen.

That sure sounds like what happens when you click the scroll wheel on most current mice. I'd start by looking at your mouse settings.

To undo it, simoly reclick your center mouse button / scroll wheel. I also want to say ESC works too.

I'm on a laptop, I don't have a mouse wheel. Escape doesn't clear it, and nothing on the mouse settings jumps out at me.

Hot damn! Pressing both mouse buttons (old unix trick) changed it to a square with 4 triangles pointing NSEW, a second time got rid of it, and the third time brought it back. It cycles between the 3 states Thanks!

I dunno. I always knew it existed, and most people know that both buttons at the same time is the 3rd button. It's real useful when doing image editing and you want to pan around an image.

It's an auto-scroll. When that's on the screen, move your mouse above or below the center point and the screen will scroll automagically. The further you move your mouse, the faster the scroll.

See above Philo. Useful for panning around images. Allows you to "scroll" in both the horizontal and vertical directions simultaneously. Probably also useful for CAD programs.

I use this feature all the time. In fact, I used it to scroll through this thread. I'd guess that I do 99% of my scrolling with it where it's supported. The advantage it has over the scrollbar is that it's right there -- no need to move the mouse over to the bar. The advantage it has over the wheel is that it's less jerky and can be left in position to slowly autoscroll while scanning over some text.

That is the "auto-scroll" feature which you can disable my mucking around in your Control Panel->Mouse properties dialog. Just look for words like Trackpoint and things like "Press Center Button and use Trackpoint" and disable them.

Ignore my ignorance
Mostly I just enter the filename (including the extension) in Google, and most of the time it finds the description.
