I Hate The New Google Look

The new google look that google has been testing seems to have become standard now, and I _hate_ it.  I want the old look back.  Google is my most visited website, they can't do this to me :-(  Does anyone on this board see any parallels betwrrn this and the sweeter coca-cola that was introduced at one time, ans spurned. In my opinion they are just making their interface more yahoo-like and trying to drive people from search to their "other services"(http://www.google.com/options/index.html) which are linked from their home page.  Yuk.  I at least want the option of the old look.  What do other people feel?

Thank you google, but I just want to _search_.

It was a subtle enough change that I "felt" something was different but couldn't put my finger on it.  Is there a list of changes they made?  It still seems to operate the same to me...

I'd been seeing these changes on occasion for over a month now.. maybe as much as 3 months, and I never knew what it was that triggered it, maybe just the server I got.

I miss the "tabs" on the homepage, but otherwise the search results page operates the same, so I really don't miss the old one.

That does it!  I say we all abandon Google and create our own search engine!

I get the new google look for the search results page.  It's basically the same, but slightly prettier.

Google's been trialling this new look for a while now.

"""In my opinion they are just making their interface more yahoo-like and trying to drive people from search to their "other services""""

Huh?  The links to the other services are *less* prominent now.  They used to be on colorful tabs, and now are just links.  They even shrank their own logo, meaning you can now see maybe 1 more search result per page without scrolling.

(a) I didn't notice anything was different until someone else pointed out the lack of tabs here, but this is probably because (b) I never use Google's front page: there's a search bar built into both of my primary browsers, and the Google Toolbar for the rare occasions when I have to use IE...

I'm a little annoyed at two cheese-movings:

The News link is now in the middle, when it used to be on the right. It was a lot easier to hit it on the right, cause you don't even have to read anything -- just drag the mouse over to the rightmost blue blob. I have to pause and read to hit it now that it's in the middle.

If i do a search for, say, "test this", the results page echoes back as always what my search terms were and links them to their definitions. So far so good. But if i just search for one word, the link is in a seperate "[definition]" link. It's just an annoying little inconsistency, and will take me a few searches to get used to.

Really it's the first one that cheeses me off the most.

Mike, I'm with you. I didn't notice the change until I accidently went to the More page rather than the News page one morning.

I think it violates what Steve Kurg says - "Don't make me think" , only by a bit though.

I think I preferred the tabs.  Can someone send me screenshots of the old google look?  It's not even as _green_ as it used to be; it was somehow comforting.  I have played with the look switch bookmarklet before now and I did not like the look.  Suddenly they just switch :-(

I think putting "News" next to "Groups" was ill-considered. Twice today I've hit "News" instead of "Groups;" not by accident, but rather because they're still news[groups] to me.

But hey, when *I* have a multi-terabyte web indexing engine, them maybe I can do it right... [grin]

You guys are kidding right?

Its the freakin' same!

I am glad someone said it. Because I noticed it this morning and I just hate it.

Yes okay I am very prone to the 'who moved my cheese' stuff. Still I just want the old look back.

*grin* such a little change, and yet it irks me so much.

Thanks, Marktaw, for the tip about using images.google.com to get screenshots of the old google page.  It doesn't have as much 'green' as I thought afterall (the tabs were actually grey); I feel much better being able to see what it used to look like.  Perhaps I can pay the old look my last respects.  And perhaps News should be before Groups.  And I still do not understand what Froogle is about (unbiased product search?) ...

Oh well, there are millions of other users for google to consider, I guess I am getting used to the new interface.

The new Google search results page looks like the MSN search results page.

:-( A warning light always goes in my head: Warning - a bad search engine has been used. Switch to Google!

Horrible.

Yeah..i'm not much for the new look either .. the position of the 'groups' tab has moved (and isn't a tab), and I'm far too used to searching for something on normal-google, and then switching over to a newsgroups search. Bah.

Well I like it, and I like the fact that they're trying to make it be better.

You guys; you whinge when something's wrong, when something doesn't change and when something does change. jeez.

Run with the "Bork, Bork, Bork" language feature(or others,  I don't know), which gives you the old google look back again.

"Does anyone on this board see any parallels betwrrn this and the sweeter coca-cola that was introduced at one time, ans spurned"

No, I don't.  The same options are there, with the addition of "more."  That's it.  The only real difference is that the little colored tabs were removed.  It's more spartan now.

Oh, and "froogle."  But seriously, there's little difference.
