capitalism is beautiful

It's truly a beautiful thing when the market screams higher and my net worth increases more in a day than I usually make in a week.  Unfortunately, the socialists in Europe will never get to experience this type of wealth creation that only occurs through efficient allocation of resources.

On the flipside, it does the same in the reverse direction. How'd ya do last week?

What about the entire years of 2000, 2001, 2002 ?

It works both ways.

Capitalism is what is sending all our jobs overseas, it can be quite a double-edged sword.

yeah, but no one would use a sword to spread SALAD CREAM on their sandwich, that would just be silly.

I'm going to assume that salad cream is a euphemism for something much more impolite in this and any other thread which refers to it..

Bleh.
Salad cream is a British mayonnaise-like condiment, discussion of which managed to generate several threads of such eye watering tedium (guilty as charged m'lud) that it's use was proposed as the signal for discussion to end.  I believe I introduced its use in sandwiches for which I'm very, very sorry.

Why don't the French bathe?  And why is every movie out of the British Isles about ugly, unemployed working class blokes struggling against the evil opressive industrialists by stripping, dancing, murdering or taking drugs?  BTW, why the heck can't you people get wider sreets?

Enough of US bashing Europe and Europe bashing US. Let's try something different.

Why can't you british drive on the right side of the road, like the rest of us?

Yes,  I know that it is a condiment.

Using it as a euphemism is much more amusing.

Stop feeding the trolls?

Next you'll tell us that whiny pedants aren't worth laughing at.

Btw, it might not be a troll - there really are people who worship capitalism as if it was the creator of all that is good in the universe. The odd thing is how few of them realise that they're talking about a highly socialist government supported economy when they're talking about the good of pure unregulated capitalism - this being one of the few actual reasons to encourage such amusing rantings.

Besides, trolls need salad cream too.

>Why can't you british drive on the right side of the road, like the rest of us?

Because we are waiting for the rest of you to see sense. I propose that you start slowly - initially only the people whose names start with the letters A-L should switch the side of the road they drive on.

Friday, March 26, 2004

Cos there's nowhere in Europe where you can invest in the stockmarket :-D

Oh - and why don't you yanks and continentals learn to drive on the left like us and the aussies? :-D

PS I prefer mayo to salad cream. I'm I a proper Englishman???

It was actually suggested to start slowly when a european country, which should remain nameless, went from left-hand driving to right-hand.

Some politician suggested that proffesional drivers, cab drivers, truck drivers and so on, should start to drive on the right and that the general public could change sides later on. Oh well, not everybody use their head for thinking.

India, of course, sorted this driving thing out years ago.

Officially you drive on the left, but in the spirit of true unbridled captalism, in practice it is up to you which side you choose to drive on.

This spirit of freedom explains why Indians are going to be taking over all your jobs and houses, and you will be living in sheds in their back gardens rolling bidis for them.

Driving stick is best done outside built-up areas where frequent gear changes are necessary.

In other words, driving stick is best done outside the mainland of Great Britain.

Therefore, everyone on the mainland of Great Britain drives stick because it's pointlessly inconvenient and they can pretend to be boy racers as they putt-putt round the illegally parked cars and weave through the obstructions at a maximum speed of 30mph. AND I read that most British drivers use the wrong gear all the time too!

This is the same school of user interface design that brought us the abomination that is salad cream.

An entire nation that knows neither how to drive, nor how to eat.

(OK, actually, the British tend to be very good drivers, so I take part of that back.)

"Officially you drive on the left, but in the spirit of true unbridled captalism, in practice it is up to you which side you choose to drive on."

In Britain, officially you drive on the left, but in reality you drive on the wrong side of the road at all times because the left side of the road is expertly crammed with parked cars.

Free salad creme in europe? What rubbish! During my last visit, I paid over three dollars for a packet of salad creme. Some socialist utopia that is! Here in the US, you get as much salad creme as you want at no additional charge!

Capitalism is way better than the dumb euro system. Stuff here is cheaper for the same quality, salaries are higher, and you don't get nickel and dimmed to death when you order a salad with 'extras' and 'add-ons'. Plus, no dammable 'cover charges' in restaurants, drinks come with free ice and unlimited refills too, and fries come with as much ketchup as you can drink and they don't charge a penny for it, or requir.e that you even buy the fries in the first place.

Many a homeless person has survived for years on free ketchup packets and ice.

Scott
Friday, March 26, 2004

Scott,
The reason they have cover charges in European restaurants is that you rarely tip.

And most European governments reckon it's better to put a roof over the heads of the homeless, so whether they can survive by scavenging or not is moot.

Stephen Jones

>>>Here in the US, you get as much salad creme as you want ...<<<

You can?  Where?  I have never seen salad cream in the US.

Interesting quotes from the Heinz web site:

>>> Alas, I've emigrated to America recently, and all they have over here is Miracle Whip, a weird Salad Cream/mayo hybrid that tastes just like it sounds...awful. <<<

I sort of like Miracle Whip.  Maybe there is something better.

>>> Love it or hate it! Heinz Salad Cream is always a topic of hot debate <<<

Perhaps the Heinz people have been reading JoS.

"Many a homeless person has survived for years on free ketchup packets and ice."

This one is definitely on the top 10 of the dumbest things I've read in my life.

"And most European governments reckon it's better to put a roof over the heads of the homeless, so whether they can survive by scavenging or not is moot."

As an european I feel safe to say that we can't really claim much of a moral ground here. While I agree with the principle behind these support programs, there's too much waste caused by fraud, i.e., support being handed to peolpe who don't actually need it.

Paulo Caetano
Friday, March 26, 2004

You're always going to get a certain amount of fraud. 10-20% is perfectly acceptable.

I don't know about Portugal but in Spain the unemployment is skewed so that people get it at the beginning of their period of unemployment when they are often able to find another part time job and also have the redundancy pay,  and get nothing after about eighteen months when they start to feel the pinch. And the fact that they can wait three or four months from being laid off to seeing any money encourages them to defraud.

Stephen Jones
Friday, March 26, 2004

"I don't know about Portugal but in Spain..."

Same here.

Then you count in those that
1. are on sick leave (I don't know if this is the correct term in english), but have absolutely no health problem.
2. have high income from illegal activities (e.g., piracy, illegal gambling), or legal activities (a few cases that I know of are in agriculture) but are getting social security money for being "poor".

These are just from the top of my head, i.e., with no research on the matter.

You can have a guy with 3 apartments, 2 houses, 5 cars, and who moves (gross income, not profit) as much money in 1 week as I earn in 3 years. And then you find out this guy and his family are on several social security programs, because they're poor.

It's not as rare as it may appear.

Malingerers are quite common. It tends to be more common with those that can take up to three days off without calling in sick, who tend to be white colldar workers in large companies or government service.

Long term malingerers are another thing. The problem there is that it is hard even for a doctor to tell how sick somebody is, and if he follows draconian rules then he may cause serious injury.

Remember that it has taken a long time for the medical profession to accept that people suffering from repetitive strain injury are not malingers.

Some times strange things happen. About five years back I was diagnosed with TB. It was perfectly symptomless and I felt fine but couldn't take up my job until I was cured and could pass the medical. Even though I felt fine the doctor wrote me out a sick note every time I asked him and the sick pay came in regularly, and although perfectly fit and capable of working I found everybody looked on me with great sympathy.

A couple of years later I was really ill and in the intensive care unit of a hospital because various parts of my innards had a altercation with a rather large knife. This happened during the holiday and as soon as the holiday ended I flew back and reported to the Saudi hospital. They gave me two weeks sick leave, but when I pointed out at the end that I was still incapable of standing for a long time they insisted that you were given a month maximum to recover from an operation and that was that. Work was sympathetic and I was given light duty, but it seemed ironic that this time I did feel quite incapable of working normally, but was diagnosed as hunky-dory.

I've been all over the US and Europe and I can say definitively that Europe does not provide better for homeless people than the US.

If you think that there are no people sleeping in parks, subways and other places in the open everywhere in Europe, you have either never been there or are delusional. The few places that have no homeless people, such as certain large german cities, it is only because they do such a good job of killing or beating them until they go elsewhere.

Dennis Atkins
Saturday, March 27, 2004

The figures for homeless in the Uk are quoted in thousands, or at most tens of thousands.

I have seen them in the centre of cities, such as London or Barcelona, but rarely elsewhere.

I don't know about the States, but I was under the impression that the figures are considerably higher
