Atom vs. RSS

How is an Atom feed template an improvement over the RSS standard? Is this new standard W3C compliant? What was so bad about RSS that they wanted to create a new thing? Was it designed for the PDAs? There's an atom I learnt in chemistry, one in the Win32 API and now there's another one in the world of web publishing and news aggregation. Why do we have to keep up with.....<CHECK_RANT_MODE_REVERT/>

You never have to adopt new technology - but you should examine the benefits and problems associated with such technology and decide if it is worth the investment in intellectual capital.

Oh, and there's an Atom feed format and an Atom API.  The two are linked by birth but separate.  http://www.intertwingly.net/blog/ (Sam Ruby's weblog) is a good place to start reading up on Atom.  Sam led the process which generated Atom.
