The machines.
Really though, I was there. Back in the 60's I worked as a machinist, metal working, heavy iron sort of work. At the time computers occupied rooms the size of a union meeting hall. But you could already see that the manufacturing economy was beginning to wane.
If you think the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth about outsourcing is bad now, go back and research the 60's and read what was being said about losing our industrial base to Europe and Asia. The shoe industry, clothes, TVs and Radios, appliances, then by the 70s steel making, autos and more.
Millions of blue collar workers were sent packing and told to retrain for service sector jobs. Industrial blue collar work had been the backbone of the US workforce for about a century. With a high school education and a few weeks of on-the-job training one could always make a good living. And then it all came crashing down in just about one decade.
We not only survived, we thrived, but in the process it did displace an awful lot of workers and hurt many who could not adapt.
