Project Management Institute
Does anyone have experience with the Project Management Professional certification available from the Project Management Institute? As I've been moving beyond simply writing software for a living, I've started getting into the realm of managing projects of all sorts. And I was wondering whether this certification would be worth the time and undoubted expense to acquire.
Any insights you'd care to share?

PMI certification is kinda like the MBA idea of "If you have an MBA, you can run any business" - PMI says "If you have this certification, you can manage any project."
It is highly respected within the manufacturing / automotive / industrial segments. As to it's value to software, that's more debatable.
If someone had a good knowledge of XP/Agile models and was PMI certified, I'd consider that a big plus. It's the "whole picture"/experienced view of project management that I value, instead of one particular certificate on the wall ...

Personally, I'm finding value in PMI even beyond certification.
I've registered for PMI and started going to the meeting recently... and have noticed value just from that.
I'm not sure yet what to think about PMP certification or whatnot, but just having a venue where you can talk to potentially hundreds of other like-minded people about managing projects/products is valuable to me.
Currently I'm just planning to go to meetings and use it as a place to meet interesting people who have similar thoughts and ideas.... so far it's working out well in that capacity.
