Good lord - I'm sitting in the lobby of the hotel where there's a huge convention in Northern Virginia and I swear the audience is at least 60% female. A lot of good-looking women (and quite a few revealing costumes, even in February)
Oh! And I just saw my first japanese guy in a kilt. (I hope it's a kilt. Could be a schoolgirl's skirt [shudder])

There is now a conga line traipsing around the hotel lobby. It's about 40 people long - there are two guys, the rest is female.
And yes, there are a LOT of geeky guys here on the arms of some pretty cute women.

I took my son (16) to an anime conference last summer. Weirdest dressed bunch of people I've ever seen. One guy walked around in just a pair of briefs all day. The normally dressed people were the misfits. And there were about 10 guys carrying huge white crosses.

- Ghost in the Shell
I haven't seen much of Love Hina, but it seems to have humor that Americans can relate to and isn't as serious as the ones I've mentioned.

I dunno, I think the anime costumes are a bit more logical than the typical footbal superfan facepaint and such. Anime fans usually just dress up like characters from shows. The getup is a bit stranger perhaps, but makes more sense methinks. The huge crosses are likely references Trigun (one of my favorite series).
Besides, everyone needs a hobby :)

The trouble with this is, that any geek guys flocking to this event are going to sit right beside Philo, watch the conga line and send messages to their geek buddies telling them how good it is......So close, and yet so far away....

For reasons that are so blatantly obvious, you both deserve a good slap in the face.
The topic is incredible off-topic (for the usally JoS stuff) but I never have a problem with that sort of thing, however dishing on some teenage girls because they are not considered pretty (in contemporary terms) is sad.

Yeah, and you really have to ask whether you want a geek girl or a nerd girl. Or guy, whatever floats your boat. At the risk of offending people here, I don't know if you can really build something with someone, male or female, who enjoys Linux. Unless they're a nerd who just wants to score a little geek cred.
I mean, in the geek world you have species like anime geeks and Linux geeks. In the nerd world, you've got a rich set of political nerds, med nerds, poetry nerds... and that's not even counting the overhyped math/science nerds. These nerds have evolved over millenia. If you need a little geekiness with your nerd, you've got CS and engineering nerds! Relatives of the anime/Linux geeks. So you have to weigh easy-pickin's with something a little more difficult but ultimately more mind-blowing.

Acutally, I kind of felt a little harsh after I posted that ("slap in the face", throw something at me for using a line like that). But I till think the comments were low. (possibly said entirely without thinking about consequences, which is something we all do)
Why the first guy? Well, he is free to correct me, and my apologies if I judged too harshly, but just why did he post a link of those girls? What was he trying to say? That not all girls at anime are worth checking out is my guess (but hey, I could be very wrong).
I just think using some teenage girls as an example of lack of beauty was low. Pick on someone your own size and I probably wouldn't have said anything.
Hey, they may never ever see that post, but it would be a shame if they did. I really like geeky people, they are gorgeous, have a naivety that charms, and bring a lot of non-contemporary beauty to a world that otherwise screams "no geek, you don't dare send flowers to her, she will know, and everyone will laugh at the idea that you thought you had a chance, their are rules to this society you know, and the rules say you are a geek"
Nothing beats a geeky person who would bend over backwords for you time and time again even when you laugh at them and make fun of them. Someone with a passion for something so strong they long ago gave up caring what the world thought of them.

Oops, and I won't get into that too much, but I am not playing the naivety game, the 'contemporary' world wouldn't take photos of these girls and write 'gorgeous' underneat.
I would hang out with these girls, because in all likelihood I would probably find alot in common with them, the likelihood is that they would care more about the inside then the outside.
But my thoughts on beauty are an entirely different topic (feel free to email me, you will see I am very sincere). But with sincerity comes reality. It is useless me refusing to say that the comment (only one comment, and note to the original poster of that comment, this rant is not aimed at you, or anyone really) was wrong, because in saying it was wrong I might be admitting that I think those girls are not beautiful.

Oh absolutely Aussie! They are extraordinary and great company, passionate about *something* (how rare is that). Personally I would have the best of time socializing with the types at that anime convention (including those girls in the picture, underage or not).
Just that the post was about single guys trying to... um, pair off, and when a single guy goes into "pair off" mode, he sees that photo and says, "um, no, where's the Next button."
