Stop javascript/DHTML overlay ads?

Like the subject line says - anyone found a successful way to stop these? They're annoying enough in and of themselves, but I'm finding more and more (whether intentionally or otherwise) they actively block my use of the web page.

Use a browser that doesn't support them, or allows you to disable them. Konqueror and Mozilla do this pretty well for me.

http://www.proxomitron.info is a proxy server that will allow you to selectively filter out javascript commands. I don't know for a fact that it will stop overlays, but I do know that it can stop blinking text and animated gif's - so there might be an option there to fit the bill.

I second http://www.proxomitron.info as it has been very good at keeping those irritants away. And, if you do web development you can tailor it to your specific needs.

If you want a simpler answer, especially if you plan to provide tech support to family...I found the google toolbar blocker catches a VERY large % of them. Install the full package, with page ranking, etc. Then go back into options and shut everything off. One important note on it..read how to download if you have the blocker on. It is simple, but my family tends to forget and just keeps clicking on the link.

I'll add Firebird to the Mozilla-based list. Unless you need the full mozilla suite, just use Firebird. No add-in needed, though there are hundreds of useful add-ins if you want them.

search google for the terms: advertising "hosts file"

The technique that most websites use is to pull Javascript and Ad Images from places like http://ad.gr.doubleclick.net so when you point those domains to 0.0.0.0 in your hosts file, you don't have that problem any more.

My hosts file has 17,779 entries in it, and I never see any advertising :)
