stuck between a rock and a hard place
I am stepping down from my current lead position job due to several discrepencys with management and intense stress level. Now my managers want me to train my underqualified replacement. I think this is totally wrong.

Tammy, why do people think we really care.
How are we supposed to respond to your post. This is one that should really be marked for deletion.

Tapiwa, if you don't have anything nice to say, or really anything of value to offer at all, STFU.

You with no name. Don't even get me started.
Lately I have been feeling that the community is being saturated with totally frivolous posts. Where a few months ago, this board was chugging along at a couple of hundred new items, it is now over the 400 per month level.

Do the math. That's a lot of topics. Anyone and their cat will create a new topic, instead of adding to a similar discussion further in the posting.
I can't get a job. I am quitting. They are outsourcing my job. Please whinge with me! bah!!

What I was driving at was that I don't think that topics like the current one add value to the board members.
With so many postings, there is now a lot more noise to sift through to get to the gems.

Train him while ypou're working out your notice. If he's underqualified he'll still make a mess of it. And you don't burn your bridges.
Never argue with your enemies. Smile and stab them behind their backs. Only argue with people you respect and think you can get to change their mind.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but ... I think you should be training your replacement. That's what always happens (certainly in IT) and you are also the most suitable person to do this job.
Of course, there may be some aspect of your own personal circumstances that I don't know about, which discounts this argument, but otherwise I think it is reasonable.
It would be unfair if they expected you to stay on for ages holding the new person's hand, for example way past your notice period. But if this is the case, just go when you're entitled to go, you don't owe them anything.

Stephen Jones has excellent advice.
And, post to these boards. People at these places discuss technology job issues to death and they're more appropriate for a discussion like this:

I get the impression that she'll still be working at the company but not as a manager.

If you're stepping down, it is totally reasonable to expect to train the person who is replacing you. It isn't up to you to decide who is qualified or not. You're still on the payroll, you need to do what they ask. Do your best, cover your ass, document everything, and let the replacement deal with anything that arises.
Now, if you had been fired, well, that's another kettle of fish, isn't it? :-)
Aside for Tapiwa: I don't think it's your place to determine what adds value and what doesn't. Let the people in control decide that. If you're not interested in something, ignore it.

You are stepping down. They have selected your replacement. You decided to step down, and now you are angry they did not let you pick your replacement.
In most places, stepping down would have meant quiting. Which is still an option. Otherwise, you do as you are asked, or you may not be.

Tammy.
Apologies for the ad hominem attack. I have not slept at all in two days.... something about Christmas makes me insomniac, and was a bit cranky.
Add to that a preChristmas deadline, me at my desk first thing in the morning, and you bore brunt of my irritation
I do apologize most profusely and unreservadly.
Having said that though, I still think the sheer amount of topics on this board is starting to reduce (at least in my opinion) the quality. When I started reading this board, I used to read almost every topic. Now I just skim through. Most of the stuff here is boring. People are just whingeing and snivelling.
Maybe Joel should start a Complaining board.
"... At one time complaining was a cottage industry. The typical maker of complaints gave them to (or traded them with) friends and family members. Sometimes the complaints were sent to newspapers or included in prayers. Friends, family, the press and God then ignored the complaints. In the sixties, however, various consumer advocates began to help complainers find a market for their wares. There is only one organization that is required to take everyone -- and their complaints -- seriously. So the government became the foremost grumble customer. And it is, of course, the government's bureaucratic agencies who have to do the buying."

Indeed. Reminds me of the "Defining moment in computing " post. Who was it that posted that wasteful drivel, again?

You with no name again.... you seem to have it in for me. I won't bite, but the difference between that post and this one, is that my post was a question. This was a whinge.
I intended to gauge opinions, and stimulate discussion, and last time I checked that thread, I think I had achieved both. You too seem to have contributed to that discussion as I recall... not that it matters of course.
I certainly think my post was a 'soup question'.

tapiwa, you also posted more comments to this particular thread than the original poster.

OT: There's several people that post without a handle.

Just a bit of support for Tapiwa.
Apologies Tammy, while I agree your plight is hard and you want to talk it about it (who wouldn't!!) it does seem like these sort of posts appear abit lately. Don't feel like you are being blamed for all of them though! I would want to talk about it too.
I love this board because of its excellent content. Lots of (seemingly) intelligent people having some very interesting discussions. I have noticed an increase in 'what should I do?' type posts. probably I have contributed to these also.
But then I suppose, we all know how heavy handed Joel can be with deleting topics he doesn't think are 'on topic', so you would almost think that anything that got by him was okay then!

Tammy, I agree with you that it's in bad form. The managers should be able to manage and cope without forcing you into what seems to be an uncomfortable position.
It's possible you detect something more behind this. For example, do you think they might be getting you to train her so they can then sack you? Lots of companies work like this. They'll lie to you so you train her.
If you suspect that's the case, maybe you should resign straight away. Then they will be forced to bargain with you to train the replacement, and you can negotiate from a position of strength.
I'm glad I work for me
