Blogging Question This may be a bit OT, but what is the etiquette for linking to other bloggers websites. Should you ask permission before you link? What about your blogroll list?

I link at will, They're posting on the internet, so it's accessible to everyone anyways.

Link away. The only thing I usually ask permission to do first is to link to someone using their real name when they don't have it prominently displayed on their site. Or (ahem, speaking theoretically) if someone has a blog they don't want their abusive husband to find, I might not link that. ;>

Also keep in mind that "no one will ever read you" is the de facto state for weblogs regardless of any actions you take. I generally assume that five or six of my closest friends read my blog, and that nobody else will. Sometimes it seems like I'm just blogging for my partner, who complains if I get into heads-down coding mode and forget to post for a few days. (=

Also, if you mention anything that you found in someone else's blog, you should include a link to give them credit.

The protocol seems to be "it's ok to link as long as you agree with what they've said, say nice things about them, boost their ego, act as their cheerleader and drive more readers to their site". I broke that one a couple of times a while back and had some amusing exchanges when I disagreed with a couple of people's posts and posted rebuttals on my site...

Thanks all for your thoughts. I also use my blog as basically my technical "journal". As I figure out how things work I post it there so I can get to it at anytime. I also find that making it public makes you more apt to write often...ya know just in case someone IS reading it, I don't want to disappoint them. Ha Ha Ha :)
