I would like to propose the following for the official motto of the Joel on Software Discussion Forum:
"yeah, whatever, I just need to make a living here"

I'd hate to do that unless we also added a secondary motto, "Who me? That's not in my job description!"

What is this nonsense of "salad cream"?!
Auditor #357
Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Dear #357,
The whole point about "salad cream" is that it is nonsense. It's a phrase that the forum members, particularly the Brits, append to topics that are considered stupid, irrelevant, off-topic or all of them.
I believe the original use of the phrase on the forum came on a thread where the quality of mayonnaise in Oslo, where Joel had had a dinner, was discussed.

If memory serves, it was suggested that invoking 'Salad Cream' would replace 'Nazi' as the thread ending reference.
Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Stephen & (blank) are both right. The suggestion that Salad Cream should be the closing reference came after a series of explainations by the British continigent on what Salad Cream actually is.
However, it rarely seems to work and the whole thread spins off into salad cream related discussion, with occasional reference to sandwiches.
(Guilty as charged m'lud. It's a fair cop, I done the blag)

I thought the Germans were more into mayonaise than salad cream.

The Germans even eat pommes with mayonnaise. Ewww...

By the way, what is it with sandwich sabdwiches you buy in supermarkets? Why do they /always/ have to have mayo on them? Blech!

The layer of oil keeps the juices from the meat from making the bread go soggy, so they can have a longer shelflife?

Well, I knew it wasn't on taste grounds.

There is always the healthy sandwich section in the supermarket. Where you can buy a smaller sandwich with less filling and it only costs a little more.

I'm sorry, but it is just that You americans do not know what it is, it is great stuff in sandwiches and chips (fries)
I do not think you should judge out sandwich fillings on whether you have tasted them, sandwiches are an important part of today's society and anyone who does not take the filling of other nations sandwiches seriousley should start thinking about what kind of person they really are.....
Some kind of sanwich Nazi perhaps? someone who thinks that ham sandwiches are acceptable, but anything more exotic than jam(jelly) should be shunned?
I knew that the world was falling apart but man this is bad.

And anybody who does take sandiwich fillings of any nation seriiously is obviously quite incapable of thinking about anything at all..
And however low my culinary standards go I still woudl not want to be part of any society where sandwiches play a part.
Incidentally, to all non-Brits who have not tasted salad cream, I can assure you you have missed nothing. It's vile.
