Not to say that some (or even all) of the people with a 'female' name are women, but I never assume that they are.
This is also due to the fact that a lot of women adopt either a masculine name or just their initials when posting to technical boards. This is because there tends to be lots of 'are you cute' or worse from the small segment of socially retarded geeks who read the board.
JOS seems to be better about this, although I remember at least one 'are you cute' directed at a female poster.

What I should have said, is that it would be interesting to see how the male::female ratio on this board is split. Tech stuff is generally assumed to be a male dominated area. A rough poll of how many women we have on the board is not much to ask for is it?
Regarding wanting to fsck, you are assuming that everyone who has signalled their intent to roger every living organism is Male. I certainly know a couple of women that share the above desire.

I'd think that a medical intake system that cared about transgendered-ness at all would care about the direction it took. There's a lot to think about once you leave the simple male/female/don't know world...

Without revealing to much, the system was looking more for gender identification rather then specifics of the transition. As a rule people who have completed gender reassignment identify themselves as Male or Female. It is only when they are in between that they identify themselves as transgendered. This particular system was geared to reflect that.
When peoples genitals become important to the medical treatment at hand it would probably be wise to add transgendered: pre-op male to female, transgendered: post-op male to female etc... However if you are dealing with people in a clinical setting that is not usually the case. More often you just want to make sure you don't make them uncomfortable by using icorrectly gender specific terms.

I don’t mind attention being called to this group, I find it curious too.
I generally find a 10:1 ratio of guys to girls when on line (mostly in techy type surroundings).
It is a given that the moment they realise you are a girl they will hit on you. I have taken my husband into chatrooms just to show the way the conversation will immediately change the moment I let slip I am a girl. It’s like ‘hey female, I am going to make lewd suggestive comments now’.
I don’t mind the attention being drawn (unlike some other posters) because the lack of females in tech related areas is common and very interesting.
At university if I walked into a computer lab at some weird hour, or went up to a group of (tech-type) guys to chat, I would have this moment of awe, where all the guys would pause, stare, you could see them all thinking ‘my gosh, a girl, in here with us, what is she doing?’, and in this moment I was given a chance to prove that I really did know my stuff, and if I did, I was automatically elevated to a status of respect. All sexism aside, because I think this is pretty natural guys and girls are actually different, and anywhere there is a lot of guys, and not so many girls, there is going to be interest, and it is good.
There are differences between guys and girls, and sometimes it can be hard to break through the barrier (both ways), so this moment of ‘what the heck is she doing in here?’ is the opening (take it or leave it) for be to break through and become ‘one of the gang’.
It also was easy for me to get help with anything as the guys would enjoy helping, it was something different, and the novelty meant that I learnt a lot. I didn’t mind.
Let’s face it, it works the same the other way. If there is a ‘typically female’ type social situation, and a guy walks into it, all the girls find it a novelty too.

I was perusing the board (and misspelling like a maniac, I might add) for some inspiration as I am a bit fried with my current project's deadline looming and me out of Redbull, and then I run across this thread.
I have to say that as much as I hate to admit it, I did find it interesting.
One thing I'd like to add, even though it's not entirely on topic is that in the probably 10-12 years and three or four positions I've had, this is the first time In my life I've worked somewhere that wasn't run by a woman, and the companies I've worked for have all been very technical in nature.
I'm not sure if it's the market (Wisconsin?) but from what the rest of you have been saying this would seem to be an anomoly?
On the flip side, I've only known a handful of women who have been programmers, technicians, etc. I'm not sure if that's a byproduct of the marketing of these positions or latent sexism or something else but it is interesting none the less.
Or maybe it's that this work is boring and it just has taken me longer to figure that out?
Anyway this conversation is a nice distraction from DateTime/SqlDateTime hell...

I work for a bunch of accountants (another male dominated world), but our office of 29 staff has 20 chicks. And aside from three of us (the admin, the general office lady and me the techy) they are all accountants, or studying to become accountants.
(ie this is not three male accountants and a typing pool full of chicks).
Female dominated professions are funny (ie receptionist) there is this aura of “that’s a girls job”, and yet it is really just a fad.
The original bakers and brewers back in England were all female, so much so that if a male took up the profession he was called a ‘male baker’ or a ‘male brewer’. Yet nowdays if I try to envision what a baker or brewer would look like, they are automatically male in my head….

I too think this is a valid question, for curiosities sake. I'm all female and there is nothing cute about me. However I have felt the stigma surrounding men and techiness.
But I don't feel that gender matters on JOS. There's definitely more focus on the topics than on what sex the posters are. I'm more nervous of posting because of being a newbie and saying something that is offendingly inane, and attracting a ferocious attack that usually has nothing to do with the thread.
But then where would be the fun without the heated debates? It's all good!

Starbucks sells them now. A bit of a large size serving, but very nice. Can give sustenance for hours while you do an intensive session with the laptop and the Wi-Fi.
(Lot's of women in my starbucks, but more seem to be doing schoolwork than hardcore coding)

Not funny nor strange at all. Aussie Chick is part of the group. As long as you belong to the group you are calling names you are home safe. You are in a way poking yourself which is always OK.
Its the same with minority groups, members can get away with stuff non-members can not.

Accounting is not actually all that male-dominated. I think if you looked at a sampling of companies, the majority of the people working in the accounting department would be female. (Although the CFO would probably be male, but then you're getting into the politics of upper management - i.e. the reason for a male CFO has less to do with accounting's gender bias and more to do with upper management's gender bias. Or something.)

huh!, yes you always get the obligatory "do you want to have sex with me" comment from someone.
I like this board though, I have received a few "geek girl...hot" type comments, but the poster knows enough to disguise his name (ie is well aware that he is being a bit of an idiot), so it comes across more in fun and less as an "do you want to have sex with me" type of comment.
ie It makes me laugh, rather then roll my eyes and wonder if I am going to get any sense out of these people.
Those type of comments can be cool and funny if done right, however this place is one of the few places that ever pulls of that balance.
