Identifying Windows version in a unbootable PC?

Hi all!!

I need to be able to ID the Windows version that's on a computer sent to us for support. We can "boot" into the computer using ERD Commander, so we can read the filesystem and the registry...

The question is, where do I have to look to be able to ID the Windows version / service pack installed?? Any registry key? Or any set of file timestamps/sized that I can check for??

Thanks a lot

It's in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CurrentBuildNumber

What happens if you make up your own version number and write it there? I'm afraid to try it.

If you inject "RedHat Fedora Distribution 1 Build 2040" into that registry key would that turn it into a penguin?
