Project Management Software

We are a small software company and are thinking of starting work on a sort of project  management software. It will have both attendance and basic project management capabilities (like task management etc). We have VB skills at hand so most probably it will not be web based.
Can anybody suggest if there is any scope for such project? or is there any mid-range software already available that caters to such needs?

Define "mid range"

Mid range means two things:

First it should not be too technical like MS project, anyone could use it without special training.

Secondly it should not be too expensive. We will be targeting a market of say within $100 for 5-10 users.

Jim, we have tried many PM packages that help get everybody collaborating. All I have to say is most of these packages have failed to take with everybody except the PM themselves. If you are going to develop a PM software that will be used specifically for software development, focus on each user experience, not just the PM's. I think this is where the other packages have failed for us.

The latest software they are playing with is g-forge. These are monsters that are hard to install and are very unorganized in my estimation. Of course, the price is right.

How is that for some vague advice?

Have you seen http://www.groove.net ?

oops, you used the G word. At least one of my posts that mentioned Groove got deleted.

I hear that the next release of Toucan Collaborate (popular Groove add-on) will have a web publisher buillt into it.

(I bet this posting gets removed too!)

Before you start work do have a look at http://www.mindbuilt.com/apt
I believe this software has almost the same specs you mentioned in your mail.
