How to get Windows XP index searching to work?
Hi,
This is a little OT, but here goes:
I'd like to be able to do boolean searches on my Windows XP PRO computer based on both filename and content (for standard formats like .txt and .doc, etc.)
I've turned on xp's indexing service, but it still won't search in the above manner.
Has anyone gotten this to work?

Hmmm... no one else has responded, which makes me think I shouln't respond either, for some reason, but here goes anyway.
IIRC, the WinXP search thing is either broken or stupid - seems like it doesn't search all files, or doesn't do it correctly, or something. I use something called "Agent Ransack" instead, which seems to work much better. It's free.

If it's the same as Windows 2000 then you have to use the Indexing Service search form in the Computer Management MMC console to query it.
Windows XP only searches certain file types by default. See http://www.johntopley.com/kb/windowsxp/0028.html
