Piano Man Move Over...

If you Google the word Joel, of course it's joelonsoftware.com that is the most relevant link. www.billyjoel.com comes in at a paltry #3.

Which proves absolutely nothing. But I was still surprised.

Wow he comes up higher than Joel Coen as well.  Interesting.  I suspect it is because geeks are prolific linkers.

what does linking have to do with google ranking?

(Am curious as I have heard this before)

>what does linking have to do with google ranking?<

Google uses a technology called "PageRank" that rates a page's popularity by how many other sites link to it.  More popular = better rating.

PageRank is a misconception. Google really does it ornithologically http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html

IA: How did you ever find such a great link?  That's so random!  (but very amusing).  I couldn't find any references to it on the Google site.

I think it was an April Fools joke that Google did last year.

I think not. While I do understand

I really could not make sense out of this

It looks like this one's supposed to be some humourous prank. Sorry but I am not that smart. Could some one enlighten me. What's it about this PigeonRanks? Its absurd.

In the U.S., April 1 is "April Fool's Day."  It's a day that's traditional for pulling pranks on other people -- making them the "April Fool."  This is an example of such a prank.

As an aside, if you pull an aprils fool day trick AFTER 12pm you're the one considered a fool. Or atleast, that's how it was explained to me through my childhood in NZ.

Oh! I am aware of the April Fool's Day and it is commonly observed (?) in India, but I couldn't relate the article with the date since no date was mentioned on the web page. I also did not relate link the previous post with its literal meaning.

Lol.  That's the problem with jokes on the web -- they can live long past the joke is over.

Actually, maybe we're all being fooled and Google really is using pigeons!  The whole "PageRank" nonesense really is just a big hoax.  ;-)

BTW, thanks for the great link IA -- it made my evening.

Is it legal to claim PigeonRank as TM'd? I'd be very surprised if they had actually filed it. Anyway, surely the joke is inspired by the Avian Carriers RFC?

Evidently all jokes and matter of humorous content now have to observe all existing trademarks and not spuriously claim patent applied licence numbers in case anyone is misled into thinking that it might be real.

We should be protected from our sense of humour, anything that causes us to laugh at the unfortunate and even tragic occurences to another individual must be eliminated if we are to maintain our respect for our little brothers, ummm fellow human beings.

Mother in laws should no longer be pilloried, they have feelings too; political leaders perform very difficult tasks and shouldn't have to put up with abuse because they are unable to form a grammatical sentence, even when its written down in front of them;religious leaders should be respected and not taunted because they don't want men that like men to be priests but leave alone priests that like little boys.

Humour, its what keeps us animals.

Turn it around - let's say I claimed a TM on something and then if someone questioned it I could just say "it was a joke". It would make the whole trademark thing a joke (tm).

weblogs are killing google.

Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Actually I think metasites and aggregators are killing google. If you try to search on something that remotely resembles a female star's name, be prepared to get pages and pages of "see her nude" sites. And if you're searching for programming tips, there will be a LOT of duplication from sites that simply aggregate articles from other sites.

"Is it legal to claim PigeonRank as TM'd?"

(TM) indicates an unregistered tradmark. (R) indicates a registered trademark.

Why would you want an unregistered trademark?

Tradmark I can almost understand, it's something to do with trad climbing, right?

Well, of course you are.  But that's only because there's no such thing as 12 PM (or 12 AM, for that matter).  There is only 12 noon and 12 midnight.

That may be the case, but Microsoft has changed all of that.  12:00 noon is now 12:00 PM, according to that clock thingy in the taskbar.

If you search google for 'pigeonrank' it replies with: 'Did you mean: "pagerank"'.
