mailing list software... Just wondering what people think is the best software for running mailing lists. Yahoogroups is good, but we want to host our own lists. Preferably on Linux.

Mailman is a pretty nice piece of software, in fact about 90% of the lists I am on use it. It's written in python, performance is ok (I've never done high volume lists myself with it, so I can't comment too much), it's easy to setup, very easy to maintain and there is a large community which offers support for it.

Enemies of Carlotta, despite its name, is a pretty good and simple mailing list manager written by Lars Wirzenius of Linux fame. It attempts to replicate the functionality of ezmlm without its complex setup and management. EoC is developed in Python like Mailman, but unlike Mailman it's reasonably small so extending it is not too difficult (provided you know enough Python).

How about an alternative to Yahoo Groups? I have never used them because of all the advertising they put in.
Dimitri.
