Where are all the new abstractions?

Where are all the new abstractions?  This is what's going to keep this industry alive.  I guess it starts at the operating system level.  Hopefully with Longhorn comes many new (worthwhile) abstractions.

Form over substance, abstraction for its own sake.  Add in a pastel UI and that's the face of Longhorn?  Delightful!

I have to confess, I can make absolutely no sense at all of this post. Although it could form the basis of a song:

"Where are all the abstractions?
Longhorn coming,
Where are all the abstractions,
Longhorn is here"

How about some new paradigms of what should happen when one hits F3? Nothing beats the fun of mystery behaviour when F3 is invoked (especially in MS apps).

IMO aspect-oriented programming is the next abstraction in the pipeline.  We're all gonna be talking about pointcuts and mixins in a couple years.

Does anybody know of any practicable applications of AOP other than application logging?

Actually does anyone have a pointer to a decent intro to AOP? Most of the articles I have seen are either a) absurdly long, b) assume you already know AOP and have been using for 25 years, or c) a & b.

Testing legacy applications in-place.
