Longhorn available to MSDN subs

If you're either an MSDN sub/ Partner or Empower program member you can get the PDC disks BUT you have to ask.

http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/longhorn/productinfo/

has details. I phoned up the partner line expecting to get a "huh whats that?" response instead I got a sensible response saying the disks should be with us in 3-4 weeks.

Glad I saved the money and didn't go to PDC now.

Whether these shows are worth the money depends a lot on how you learn best. I'm usually glad I attended for the opportunity to talk to other attendees and get their reactions, for the opportunity to meet and greet friends, partners, and competitors, and for the chance to grab Microsoft people in the hall and get detailed, specific answers to specific questions. Talks by people like Don Box and Hillel Cooperman are worth the trip, imho.

I downloaded "Longhorn" from one of the usenet groups a couple of days ago and I'm underwhelmed.

Yes, this is "pre-alpha" software,  and the final retail version will be (hopefully) be very different.  But,  so far I don't like what I see:  horribly, horribly slow and moving even farther in the direction of "dumbing down" the user interface.

Now I see why they're saying it won't be ready till 2006.

Joel, I agree with you over the meeting folks stuff. I often go to user groups. I avoided the pdc this year because although the technology is all new it still feels strongly like its in flux. A european teched  is probably better value for me.
