ACM membership useful?

How many people here are members of the ACM (or some such organization) and how useful is it?

What (if any) SIGs (Special Interest Groups) have you joined?

Any other organizations to further your IT-related knowledge / skills that you can recommend?

I belong to the ACM and SIGMOD ( Special Interest Group on the Management Of Data).

As with all of these types of organizations you get out of them what you put into them. Lately I haven't been putting much into it, so I'm not getting much out of it and I'm really debating letting my membership lapse this year because I simply don't have the time to keep up with it.

Your mileage may vary.

Joining to get the various magazines never made sense to me since I have no shortage of reading material. I think its main value is if you live in a major metro area with several active SIGs, so you can attend talks, workshops etc.

Thanks for replies :)

Round here (za) there aren't that many SIG meeting places, and I'm not inclined toward flying 13 hours to get to a workshop :)

Did you learn anything specific because of your ACM membership or is staying with google OK?
